Mercs for Hire: 3 for 1 Special!

Used without permission.

Ok, so today’s deal is going to be a three-for-one special! This upcoming weekend (December 17) is the Steamroller Tournament that I’ve been prepping for and I decided to get even closer to finishing up my Merc army. Over the weekend I was able to knock out the Ogrun Bokur, a Grundback Blaster, and Thor Steinhammer. This only leaves me a few more models left to paint, and having the rest of this week is plenty of time to having it done. I am looking at finishing up the Hammerfall High Shields tomorrow so that I have a few days to finish working on the other essential items that are needed for Warmachine / Hordes. (I plan on making some homemade markers for spells, effects, etc to use for my army… Have a simple idea in mind, just gotta put it in motion…)

Anyways, first up was the Ogrun Bokur. I plan on using this guy as either Durgen’s or Gorten’s personal bodyguard and have him take those few extra shots that get sent his way during the course of a game… He’s only 3 points and is able to do a lot for that amount of points. I happen to have 2 of these models, but they are different sculpts… this sculpt is much bigger and makes the Bokur look even meaner so I decided to go with this one. In keeping in tune with the theme of the Merc army that I have so far, I used a lot of similar colors to help tie him in. And the green skin tone is actually the same Camo Green that I’ve used on countless other models in the army. All in all, I am pleased with the way he turned out.

The other one was Thor Steinhammer. I like his abilities more and more each time I play a game with him. He is able to really help out the warjacks that he chooses to marshal and can give some great abilities during the game. I was kinda intimiated about painting this model because there’s so many metal parts on it and I was afraid it wasn’t going to have enough detail to make it stand out. I was able to use enough different metal colors to make it look good and, as always, the Devlan Mud wash is a freakin’ thing of beauty. Hands down the best ink I’ve ever used…

Lastly, I added a Grundback Blaster to my army list. These guys are good for anti-infantry models due to their spray template. They work really well with Gorten Grundback and even without getting a focus for the boost can still hurt lightly armoured infantry. I decided to paint him the same color scheme as the other Driller that I did in the same gray color. Fittingly, I added the teeth in the front of it just like the Driller as well… really helps to tie ’em in.

So far, I only have 9 models left and I will be completely done with my Mercs army. I’m thinking I’m going to move to 40k and work on my Deathwing army after that… but who knows what will present itself when I get there. I’m hoping to have at least 1 win this weekend because, since I’m still very much learning the game, that will really go to show that I’m progressing. I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of things that I forget about or have to be reminded of. It’s going to be a learning experience for me but I’m looking forward to playing competitively. Anyways, below is what’s left to paint. As always, thanks for looking!

Mercs for Hire: Durgen Madhammer Arises!

Used without permission.

Woke up this morning and instantly felt like painting… I’m so close to having this army done that I can feel so my motivation for painting is at an all time high right now. You know that feeling you get when you’re about to have it all done, right? Well that’s what I have right now. I must admit that the Hammerfall High Shields are a little bit intimidating… I hate painting units. I’ll have to tough my way through them when they come around. Sadly, I think I’m going to wait to paint them until the end… I just can’t get that motivated to paint them… On a side note… I timed myself for this guy… Started at 7:58 AM and ended at 10:37 AM. Woot!

Anyways, so I’ve been wanting to try out Durgen Madhammer in a game and I hate playing with models that are unpainted… So I went ahead and got started on Durgen this morning. I decided to go with the same Graveyard Earth color that I went with on both the Avalancher and the Forge Guard. I’m please with the way this model turned out. I think I did as good a job as I could possibly do on the eye too… That was definitely one of the smallest details I’ve ever seen on a miniature. I also picked out some gems that circle Madhammer’s Hammer.

After reading up on some fluff about Durgen, it seems that he’s very high strung and likes to blow things up. He generates one more focus than Gorten but his jack allowance is one less… so it’s a give and take kind of thing. Just comparing both the warcaster’s cards, I think Gorten is better… but you can never really tell something when reading it on paper… you have to put it into practice. Which is why I decided to get him painted and done! Also, Durgen Madhammer seems like he has all sorts of contraptions attached to him… bombs or some type of explosive and also lots of wires… I had an extra strand of old guitar string so I decided to make it coming out of his cannon and attach to the back of his suit. At some point, I’ll also attach the hammer but I had that piece already cut out from a previous project so it was conveniently cut to fit as it was… I think adding the guitar string is a very simple, yet effective addition to the model, and really helps to add character to him. Anyways, I’ve updated the ‘what’s left to do’ list and have put in some pics so you can see the progress. As always, thanks for reading.

Mercs for Hire: Grun Cragback & Lug Ready for Action!

Used without permission.

Got some free time this evening after work and decided to knock out the Minions Grun Cragback & his faithful companion Lug. Getting him painted gets me even closer to finishing off the army and I’m hoping to get even more knocked out this weekend. I have to do some work first thing in the morning and I think that I’ll go for the Ogrun Bokur. I’ve been messing around with a 50 point list and I keep going back and forth. At any rate, I just swap in a few different models and it’s all good. Can’t wait to get it all painted up.

So I tried to go with a dirty polar bear look for Lug, and even though it didn’t turn out great, I’m ok with it because I think you still tell that he’s supposed to be white instead of some other color. For Grun, I picked out a few small items with bright golds and silvers, and chose to paint the wolf pelt gray. I actually had to go back twice and paint the front because I didn’t realize until it was painted that the pelt is actually wrapped around him in the front! The eyes I’m not too proud of… There was a smal piece of flash in the left eye and I had to dig it out… because of that I had to go back and touch it up as best as I could and it didn’t turn out good at all… Oh well.

Anyways, another one bites the dust. Here’s some pics of them both. Also, I have bases incoming for Lug so once that arrives I’ll put it on him. At this point though, he’s considered complete.

Mercs for Hire: Ghordson Basher All Done!

Used without permission.

Now that the Thanksgiving Holiday is over with, it’s time to re-focus back to my Mercenaries army and finish off what’s left. Remember that I’m working towards a 50 point list and plan on participating in an upcoming tournament to be held in northern Virginia. It’ll be my first ever tournament (well, at least first in a LONG time…) for Warmachine and a buddy of mine and I are excited to be going. So far, I’m a little more than halfway done with the army and the thing I have found is that it’s very easy to paint models in this range. For one thing, it’s only a single model that has to be painted, not an entire unit, so it really makes for about me painting a model at each paint session. The only struggle that I have is finding the time as well as the motivation to get it all done. I’m not concerned at all about not completing everything, I just have to stay focused.

So to that end, I picked back up where I left off and got to work last night on the Ghordson Basher. I really like this model. It’s like a little steampump engine with legs and is capable of doing some Slam abilities. It even follows up afterwards and does some small burst damage to finish off the knocked down opponent. I’m still debating about whether I should allow Thor to jack marshal him or just keep him with the warcaster (either Durgen or Gorten)… I know that he can become very beasty if taken with Thor, but I’m still learning how to keep Thor alive so I’m hesitant to join them together in case Thor gets picked off again and leaves me with a useless Basher…

Anyways, so I went back to the Camo Green color for the Ghordson Basher. This was a really quick paint job and didn’t take much at all… There are really only 3 colors on this guy so it made for some quick painting. I think in all it took me about 30 minutes… (sadly, that shows…) After I was done painting and inking it, I went back and gave the Basher some kill marks along the left side panel of his leg. This is to add a little bit of character and show just how tough this guy can be. In sticking with the theme for my Merc army, I added a military type “1” on the top of the head armor. The base is on back order because I realized too late that I was out of them so once that gets in I’ll paint it up and put him on there. Other than that, all done for now! Not sure where to next, but I’m thinking Thor Steinhammer. Thanks for looking and enjoy the pics!

Mercs for Hire: Ghordson Avalancher!

Used without permission.

Got the Ghordson Avalancher all done! Even though this guy is rather pricey I still usually take him in my army list mainly because of his effectiveness. He has a cannon that really serves as the only long range weapon available to Mercenaries. Plus, it’s AoE 3 which really helps on the light armoured troops. As I said in my last post, I was painting this guy concurrently with the Horgenhold Forge Guard so it was nearly done when I finished them. So yesterday before I took off to the football game (sigh… damn Redskins…) I knocked out what was left.

I decided to stick with the same color scheme that I used on the Horgenhold Forge Guard… It’s Graveyard Earth and looks really good on armor. I picked out all the bolts with silver and then painted a nice lookin’ “37” on the left side of the torso… Sadly, I didn’t realize that it would be covered up by the enormous shield that he uses so you have to look kinda hard to notice it…

So anyways, another one bites the dust and now I’m that much closer to getting this army all done. I’ll want to have it completely painted for the tournament on December 17th. Not sure which one is going to be next… I’m thinkin’ maybe the Ghordson Basher but we’ll see. Anyways, thanks for lookin’ and enjoy the pics!

Mercs for Hire: Horgenhold Forge Guard!

Used without permission.

Next up on the painting block is the Horgenhold Forge Guard. I really like the punch that these guys pack on the battlefield and their 2″ reach is nothing to sneeze at. They are elite hand-to-hand warriors and are a very good addition to a Merc army. I run with a total of 6 in my current army but will, at some point, probably up that to 10. They have a few special abilities that makes them worth their points. They are, however, very easy to hit… which is one of their drawbacks. But taking the good with the bad is part of the game I suppose. So anyways I decided to get these guys painted in preparation for this week’s battle report. So another of the Merc “to be painted” candidates falls off the list. I’m moving right along!

I chose to go with a brown colored armor that was really just highlighted using a drybrush technique. I picked out all the bolts and metal things then gave a good wash of Devlan Mud. That is some of the best ink I’ve ever used… it works wonders. Anyways, I picked out some of the details on the hammers to make them stand out a bit and used a blue wash to give an “energy” type of feel. It’s hard to see in these pics but it’s there, I promise! Also, in these pictures the bases are not completed. I wasn’t finished with them at the time I took these pics but they are all done now and I’ll have them glued onto them today. So I’m going to count these guys as 100% complete as of the typing of this post.

Meanwhile, I was picking at the Ghordson Avalancher while letting some of the paint on the Forge Guard dry. So that one is about 60% complete and I’ll have him done today as well. More pics to come of the Avalancher once it’s complete so look for another update this afternoon! Almost have the list nearly complete, though, I did add 2 more units to the mix that now need to be painted in order for me to fill out my 50 point list for the upcoming tournament in Virginia. So, now I have Grun Cragback & Lug and a Ghordson Basher added to the list… Oh well, I have until December 17th so that gives me plenty of time to get these guys all painted up.

Here’s an update on what all has been completed and what is left to be done. Enjoy the pics and please let me know what you think. As always, thanks for reading!

Mercs for Hire: Gorten Grundback!

Used without permission.

Finally got around to painting Gorten Grundback, the Dwarf warcaster for my Mercenaries force. I had started on this guy a few weeks ago but never finished him. So yesterday afternoon I motivated myself to sit down and finish him up, as my blog was in desperate need of an update. So a buddy of mine and I have found a local Warmachine / Hordes Steamroller 50 point tournament coming up in December and have decided that we are going to participate. This means a couple of things for me, 1) I’ll have to up the list that I’ve been playing from 25 points to 50 points, 2) I’ll have to play games at that points change also and get more games in so that I won’t look like a n00b on the day of the tournament and, 3) I’ll have to get in gear to have it all painted by December 17th. There’s no doubt in my mind that I can do it. I’m excited to get the rest of the army done and take it to an actual tournament and compete. I’ve never been in a Warmachine Tournament so I’m looking forward to it.

So with Gorten Grundback I must admit that I was a little disappointed that he is so plain for being a warcaster model. It was relatively easy to paint and there’s not really anything that stands out on him to make him jump off the board at people looking at the army. I chose to go with the same Camo Green that I used on the Gunners and one of the Drillers and I think it ties them in pretty nicely. I like the huge hammer that he’s wielding and I tried to add a few gems to it to make it stand out a little bit. Of course, I am going with the same unifying deck bases on this entire army so his fell right in line with what is completed so far. A little static grass to the front and he’s done!

So now that I am up to 50 points I’ll have to figure out what else needs to be added to complete this army. As of right now, here’s what’s left on the painting block. I believe I’m going to start on the Forge Guard this weekend, so they’ll be next up.
