New Midwest Gaming Alliance Forums now open!

So there is a tournament upcoming this Saturday, April 26th in Wichita, Kansas that I plan on attending. I’ve been fine tuning my Lizardmen for one last go in a tournament and believe I have a great list now. I’ve done some painting on various models that I want to include into my 2,500 point list and will have another update tonight on those models (Spoiler alert: Ripperdactyls!). But first, since we’ve gained a lot of momentum in the last few months on the tabletop gaming scene we thought it’d be a good idea to create our own forums in order to get all local gaming groups to better communicate with each other. It’s still in it’s infancy stages so the forum is brand new, but if you’re local to the Midwest then please take the time to sign up and let’s continue to build off of the momentum we’ve created and get bigger and better things here in the Midwest. So far, we’ve built great relationships with the guys in OKC (their forums are grimdark.org/forums, hit it up!) and some players in Kansas City and even as far our as Denver. The ultimate goal here is to get everybody talking and have another great GT beside the Slobberknocker GT here in OKC so that we can really show the rest of the country that the Midwest has it’s very own set of talented and hardcore tabletop gamers.

Please spread the word, get people excited, and let’s continue on with the tournament series. Use the forums to communicate all kinds of things from new pics of upcoming models to your own tournament announcements that are in the area. Visit the new Midwest Gaming Alliance Forums at http://mwgamingalliance.boards.net and sign up as soon as you can and let’s get the dialogue started! Now’s the time to strike! The iron is hot!

More pics to come tonight on my finished Ripperdactyls and my whole army I’m taking to this weekends tournament! As always, thanks for reading!

40K Chronicles: Deathwing Dreadnought Horatio Complete!

Used without permission.

Used without permission.

Keeping in line with the completion of my 40k Deathwing army, I decided to go ahead and finish up Dreadnought Horatio. I started on him at the same time I was working on the Land Raider Crusader, mainly because I was using the same paints. Two birds with one stone, if you will. After getting the base coats on him I focused solely on the Land Raider, and was determined to get back to him when the time came. Well that time finally came yesterday and I was able to knock him out. If you recall, this is actually the v.2 of Dreadnought Horatio because the original one that I painted got lost in my move from Seattle to Oklahoma City. So technically, I should have 2 of these guys in the army…

I’m not very up to date on all the new types of Dreadnoughts that are in the Space Marine arsenal anymore so I don’t know exactly what type of Dreadnought body this one is… I do know that I found it on Craigslist not too long ago for a cheap price and figured it would do the job. I like the power fist on this model as well, much bigger and reminds me of something out of the Pacific Rim movie. Here’s the latest addition to my Deathwing army, Dreadnought Horatio:

Again, I have opted to keep the main chassis of Horatio the standard bone color of the Deathwing, but then painted each arm in Dark Angels Green to match the Land Raider Crusader as well as tie in overall with the Dark Angels theme. The gun barrels are painted red, just like the rest of the army and the base is the standard base for Dreadnoughts, so nothing special there. Here’s some more shots:

With the completion of Horatio, I now only have the Deathwing Knights, Librarian, and the other Land Raider Crusader. I’ll have it done in no time! Let me know what you think. Thanks for reading!

40K Chronicles: Deathwing Squad Nike Complete!

Used without permission.

I finally made it into the local Games Workshop here in Oklahoma City this past weekend to visit my friend playing a pickup Fantasy game… While I was there I found out just how far out of the loop I was on new models, paints, and much more since I’ve been out of the scene for a while… As I was perusing the many boxed sets and blisters, I came across a flyer for a Warhammer 40k Escalation League…. On the bottom of the flyer it read “This escalation league is to get people playing again, dusting off an old army that you never finished, or to simply start something new…” And that spurred me into getting the dust off the ole’ Deathwing army and get to painting them. So this will serve as a resurrection post for my 40k Deathwing army and bring it all back to life!

The basic format for the Escalation league is 750 points for the month of January, 1,250 for February, 1,750 for March, 2,000 for April and 2,500 points for the league finale in May. I have a little over 2,000 points in my Deathwing army and could add another Dreadnought or a 5-man squad in order to beef it up to 2,500 points… we’ll see when the time comes. Basic points are earned by playing up to 3 games per month (at 1 point per game) and also entering your painted units/models in the local painting contest. 1 point for entering the model and another point if you manage to win the painting contest that month. Again, the entire purpose is to get people excited about playing and to be honest I could use the tune-up for 40k again, since I haven’t played it in years and am unfamiliar with the rule set…

If you’ve seen my previous 40k posts then you’ll know that I got started on this army a little over a year ago and had good progress at the time. I finished 2 five man squads and both Belial as well as a Chaplain. In addition, I finished a Dreadnought. However, the dreadnought was lost during my relocation to OKC and so I’ve had to acquire another and add him to the list of things that need to be painted. But before getting to the dreadnought, I decided to knock out another unit of Deathwing Terminators – Deathwing Squad Nike!

Deathwing Squad Nike.

Deathwing Squad Nike.

I have the kneeling model that was originally released with the Space Hulk re-release a few years ago and added him to this squad. I also have the other Terminator holding the Tyranid head in another squad – Squad Barrage… I like the extra character these models bring to the army since they are not like the others. It helps to make it stand out a little bit more. Here’s a couple more pics:

And here’s a couple more of the rest of the unit. Lookin’ forward to finishing off this army since I’ve had it sitting for so long. I’m thinking I’ll work on either the Dreadnought Horatio or one of the Land Raiders next… Also need to squeeze in the Bastilodon when I can. Lots to do so I better get back to it!

Trollblood Tales: Dire Troll Mauler Complete!

Used without permission.

Sorry all for the long break in between posts… A lot has been on my plate recently. I’m about to marry the woman of my dreams this upcoming Saturday, November 9th! It’s been a long time coming and I’m so happy that she said yes! Needless to say, the wedding planning has taken up a lot of my time but I was able to squeeze in some painting the other day. She actually loves that I paint and thinks it’s cool! The only problem: I had to cut her off the other day because she said my models were “cute”… sigh… I’ll have to work on that…

Anyways, I’ve been working with HornedRatRob and he tells me that the WarmaHordes scene is pretty big in Wichita. And since I make frequent trips up there I figured I’d like to get my Trollbloods going again. Granted, WarmaHordes is not my #1 “go-to” game, but it helps in the transition. Warhammer Fantasy will always have a place in my heart and will likely always be #1, but there’s time for coming up. So much so, in fact, that me and some of the old gaming crew have decided to partake in the awesomeness that is The Lonewolf GT, which is one of the biggest Warhammer Fantasy Grant Tournaments in the country. I’ve been twice before and looks like I’m going to make it a third time. My only dilemma this time is what army to take. I’ve got to make a decision between Daemons of Chaos and Beastmen. Good thing that the tournament isn’t until March 22-23 so that gives me some time to start working on whichever army I choose. Those guys have always put on a great tournament so I’m anxious to get back to a good tournament and show of my skills. Now, back to WarmaHordes…

If you recall, my fully painted, about 65-point Warmachine Mercs army was “stolen” from me when I relocated from Seattle to Oklahoma… And the company is a bunch of thieves so I can say sayonara to that army, as well as every bit I’ve ever collected over the past 12 years… Saddens me, really, that there’s people out there like that. But there’s nothing I can do about it and I definitely don’t want to dwell on it. So anyways, I’ve purchased a new Trollbloods army and have acquired about 65 points of this army as well. To start things off, I went with the Dire Troll Mauler, one of my personal faves. I like the old metal model because it’s pose is much more frightening, if you ask me. Here’s a couple shots:

mauler

He’s the first of the army to be completed. I’m working on an Impaler next then probably Madrak Ironhide. I’ll eventually get e’m all knocked out before I really dive into my next Fantasy army. I know I’m going to have to be quick because March will be here before we know it. Here’s a few more shots:

Look it over and let me know what you think. More to come! Thanks for checking it out!

Trollblood Tales: Troll Axer and Impaler Join the Ranks!

Used without permission.

Today I was able to dedicate some time to getting my Trollbloods army complete. In taking one step closer to completion, I finished up the Troll Axer and Troll Impaler, both light warbeasts for the Trolbloods army. CTK and I are going through a campaign that involves 3 of us and we are looking to start this upcoming Tuesday so it has gotten me interested / motivated to start working on the Trollbloods again. We are doing a hex-based campaign called the Warmachine Conquest Campaign and it will be very short but we are just looking for an opportunity to play some games and put the armies to good use. I’ll also be using my blog to give updates each week that we make our moves. The standard format is that the campaign is turn-based and we each have options of fortifying our hexes and generating Resource Points. After 20 rounds, whoever has the most… wins… Pretty simple and straightforward! So here’s a picture of the quickly put-together campaign board:

As for the models that were painted, the Axer and the Impaler, I went with the standard look that I chose on my Dire Troll Mauler because I didn’t want to use the normal blue color for them. I like the brownish look to them that I chose and so kept in line while painting these guys. I noticed there’s a lot of small details on each of these models like the small Trollblood Whelp that is peekin his head out of the Axer’s bag and the 2 chickens that are attached to the Impaler’s belt. Both really help to make the models stand out and I think it really drives home the nature of the Trollbloods theme. Here’s a pic of both the Axer and Impaler:

As for gaming terms, I usually use both of these guys in just about every list I use… the Impaler being very effective at taking down big things with his critical strike (shooting attack) and the Axer being able to take on buku’s of light infantry with his Thresher attack. As far as I’m concerned, both of these guys are auto-includes in the Trollbloods army and now this adds the base battlegroup for my army… A Troll Axer, Troll Impaler, and a Dire Troll Mauler. Here’s another pic of both of them:

And a single of the Impaler:

Another of the Impaler (side view – notice the chickens!):

And of the Axer:

And a side view of the Axer (Trollblood Whelp in the bag!)

I believe I’m going to work on both Borka Kegslayer and Madrak Ironhide – both warlocks – next because I tend to switch between the two when playing this army. They both have some very good benefits and they work well… it’s hard to tell who’s actually better. At any rate, I was able to get the paintbrushes going and got some models knocked out… I’ll have an update when I’m on to the next ones… As always, thanks for reading/looking!

40K Chronicles: Deathwing Dreadnought Horatio Complete!

Used without permission.

Where oh where did the month of March go??? I was finally able to sit down and look at my blog and realized that it had been over a month since I last posted. As most of us usually encounter, Life has stepped in and taken over a lot of my time and has left with little left over to paint. My bro came down and visited a few weeks ago, I found out I was moving back across the country in a less than 2 months, had another in-law come visit, and then St. Patty’s day came and went… All of that (plus more stuff I haven’t mentioned) has left me with little time to do some modeling / painting. So this morning I found myself alone and decided to finish the Dreadnought that I began a few weeks ago. It was almost like it was taunting me each and every time I walked into my office and it sat there… half painted… So I set to work this morning and told myself that I wouldn’t stop until it’s been done.

Before I get into the actual painting of it, I want this post to also serve as an update to my 2012 Gaming Resolutions. As you’ve already discovered from the words above, I didn’t do much of anything in the month of March so it really set me back. It has actually been about 3 weeks since I last played a game as well… and that was a game of Warmachine. There are no upcoming tournaments so it has been really hard to get focused on one thing since I don’t have the tournament in place to keep me motivated to get my things painted. That said, I won’t be able to make Adepticon this year… even though I paid for it… I knew it was going to be a long shot and then when I thought there was a chance I was going to make it, I find out that I’m going back to Seattle in June. So I decided to start saving as much money as I can in order to get a house when I get back there… and spending $300 on a plane ticket to Chicago didn’t seem like the practical thing to do. So anyways, I’ll just have to check the several blogs of people that will attend next weekend and get and idea of how it went. Hopefully next year… Here’s the 2012 Gaming Resolutions list so far:

– Paint 50 points of Trollbloods (WarmaHordes – In Work)

– Paint 2,500 points of Orcs & Goblins (Warhammer Fantasy)

– Paint 2,000 points of Deathwing (Warhammer 40K – In Work)

– Attend Games Day 2012

– Attend at least 2 major Warhammer Tournaments

– Attend at least 3 local WarmaHordes Tournaments (maybe 1 major one…) (In Work this month and next)

Attend Adepticon (Won’t be able to make it… sigh…)

– Paint 35 points of Khador

Start a new Warhammer Fantasy army (Done!)

– Paint a 1500 point Salamanders Army

Anyways, I set to painting Horatio this morning and went with the standard Dreadnought look. Bone armour and DA Green arms with the red storm bolter, to match the rest of the army. This is another custom base that matches the rest of the army as well… I believe it’s shale or something like that. I do have a few more variants of the arms for Horatio but I’ll usually go with the default Assault Cannon & Power Fist, so that’s what you see here. Also sticking with the rest of the army, I painted the power fist blue… to make it stand out. Here’s Horatio:

And here’s a different view:

And another view:

Up close and personal:

And another:

Sorry for the delay in posts… but March was a busy month and I anticipate the next few months will be close to the same, though I’m going to try harder to paint when I can and post more. When I have to move back to Seattle, I’m going to ship my hobby things so that I don’t have to deal with the moving company handling them the way they do. When I moved here I had several things turn up broken, so I figure that I will spend the money and pack it myself so that I’ll have the peace of mind knowing that if it does break, it was my fault… So yea, I got a lot going on and I’m looking forward to the next several months, trying to get things back in order, and starting over in Seattle again, hopefully finding a good gaming group out there (I’ll be living in a different area than where I was last time)… So there it is so far, as always, thanks for checking out my blog!

Lastly, for those of you keeping track, here’s what’s left to paint to complete my Deathwing army:

– Deathwing Grandmaster Belial

– Chaplain Cassius

– 5 man Terminator Squad (Infernus)

40K Chronicles: Deathwing Squad Barrage Complete!

Used without permission.

Continuing on the Deathwing trend this week I decided to knock out yet another squad of Deathwing Terminators. This particular squad is named Barrage and is quite fitting considering they are primarily used for ranged support. They’ve been equipped with Power Fists and Storm Bolters to add to some long range firepower, and then gave the squad the upgrade of the Cyclone Missile Launcher, to help with anti-tank abilities. The Cyclone Missile Launcher is one of my favorite models in the entire game… and being able to field them in a Deathwing army I use them as much as I can, so you will definitely see at least one more in this army. Because the termies can be equipped with either SB/PF or TH/SS – Lightning Claw combos, I decided to give the Missile Launcher Terminator the Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield combo, giving him a little better staying power as well as some offensive output, should this unit get into HtH combat (which is very likely…)

So yea… it’s been hard for me to get over the hump of constantly painting bone armour… so I’m going to mix it up and start on one of the Land Raider Crusaders next. I might even throw in a Trollblood or two… but I’m really wanting to finish off this army so I can have it 100% complete… I went ahead and got the basecoats of all the remaining terminators done… so that at least helps me there… so I really just have details to pick out on the other 2 squads, less a little bit of armour touch-up. Anyways, check back soon because I hope to have the Crusader done by this weekend. Here’s a pic of Deathwing Terminator Squad Barrage:

Terminator Squad Barrage.

And here’s some close-ups of the Captain and one of the Terminators:

And the Cyclone Missle Launcher and another with Storm Bolter & Power Fist:

When the Space Hulk game came out a few years ago I wanted to get my hands on it but it came and went pretty quickly, as people swooped it up with the quickness… I remember asking for it and people laughing at me, saying there was no way I could get it because it was already sold out. Well… the reason wasn’t so much for the game as it is for the actual Terminators that come with the box. They have very dynamic poses and fit in perfectly with an All-Terminator Deathwing army. Fast forward a few years and I’m able to find a couple of them – for cheap – on eBay! So one of them is in the squad and this is the guy who has the severed Tyranid head in his left power fist hand… One of my favorite models and an excellent standout model to go with my army, I think. So here’s that model, which fits in nicely with the army:

Brother Savionne, showing what he's capable of...

Here’s another shot of him:

And one more of the entire squad again, with a slightly different angle:
